Hey, notice anything different? This website has recently been altered by www.bluescreenradio.com to be more accessible and easier to navigate...and easier also for me to add new content on a daily basis. Still, this website will always be a work-in-progress. It's intended to be similar to a blog, but technically isn't one.  Unlike most other websites, this one gets renewed on a weekly if not daily (and sometimes hourly) basis. See below for the list of updates.

I report neat information about hunting, dog-training, natural history, breakthoughs in evolutionary science,  and the popular science of wildlife research and breakthroughs in animal behavior--the kind of thing that seldom gets published in the popular press. I promise you that if something doesn’t keenly interest me, I won’t try to pass it off to you either.

So…if you’re a newcomer, where do you begin? For a quick overview of site content, the PHOTOS section will alert you to the fact that the success of my newest book, “ANTLERS: A Guide to Collecting, Scoring, Mounting and Carving” is very much on my mind. But, I won’t let that get in the way of my guiding you through an interesting website. (Wasn’t that neat…the way I just now inserted the word “guiding” to make you think of “Antlers: A Guide”?) See more about this book at: Click here to see Antler Guide book

If you‘ve come this far, you might as well take a look at my other two books: “GROUSE HUNTERS GUIDE” Click here for Grouse Hunter book  and “MAKE MORE USE OF YOUR DEER”. Just Click here for Deer book .

~ The NYS Breeding Bird Survey is now accessible online. To view the Ruffed Grouse distribution, click on Click to see grouse distribution To see how the grouse population has changed from earlier data for 1980 - 1985, you can toggle back and forth.

~ For Woodcock  http://www.dec.ny.gov/cfmx/extapps/bba/bbaMaps.cfm?bndcode=AMWO&year=2000

~ I recently placed an advertisement for “ANTLERS: A Guide...” on the homepage of www.shedantlers.org , which is a rapidly growing organization of outdoor people who search the springtime woodlands for shed antlers. The ad itself links you back here to the MY BOOKS section of my site, but if you have any interest in antlers, I recommend that you visit their website. Shed-hunting has become a new sport in America and is worth knowing about.  Here's the direct Link to the advertisement:  Click Here To See "Antler" Book

~ I'll again be teaching a course at Chautauqua Institution (western NY) this summer, 2008. The title is: “How to Profit at Writing and Marketing Your Non-Fiction Magazine Articles and Books”.  For details for 2008 and course description, go to the CONTACT ME page. I've recently created a thread for nonfiction writers in the FORUM...and you're invited to join in the discussions.

~ Link to antler stem cell research ... Click Here For Research Page

~ About five months ago I finished an article about how to hunt grouse without a dog, and it now appears in the October 2006 issue of OUTDOOR LIFE (subscription copies only). The title, seemingly facetious yet strategically accurate (I think), is “Don't Pussyfoot the Thunderbird“. Click on Click Here To View This Article . Be sure to see the sidebar on the effectiveness of gun-action type (Auto, SXS, OU, etc.) on knocking grouse out of the sky.

~ My article, “ANTLER POINT RESTRICTIONS: A Case of Unintended Consequences?” now appears in the Spring, 2006 issue of “Fair Chase”, the official publication of the Boone & Crockett Club. Either go to ARTICLES or click on this: Click Here To View This Article for my original draft without the photos.

~ There's a new article of mine, “THE CHOLESTEROL WARS: Venison vs Beef” in the ARTICLES section. It's excerpted from my 2004 make-more-use-of-your-deer book, and uses nutrition data from the USDA website...and I think you'll be surprised. Venison is significantly higher in minerals and vitamins, but slightly higher in cholesterol. This article will appear in a 2007 issue of Deer & Deer Hunting magazine.

~ My article, “Shed-Hunter's Best Friend” about training a dog to hunt for shed antlers appears in the March 2006 issue of DEER & DEER HUNTING.

~ Big Time! My antler book was favorably reviewed on ESPN Online in December, 2005. Check it out at: Click Here For ESPN Site

~ Also, Christopher Camuto of Gray's Sporting Journal has favorably reviewed both my antler book and the earlier “Making the Most of Your Deer“ in the Sept./Oct. 2006 issue.

~ Go to PHOTOS to see a new population density map for the Ruffed Grouse. This is based on observational data collected by Audubon volunteers in 2003. Click on “More Info“ to see how the whole thing was put together. Or, just click on this link: Click Here To View Grouse Map

~ I've added “DO ANTLERS REALLY MAKE YOU HORNY?” to the ARTICLES section. Also, a PHOTO of Jack Brown the “Bonecarver“ and some of his work.

~ I’ve also activated the article, “MAD ABOUT GUN DOGS”. This piece appeared in GUN DOG magazine nineteen years ago.
